Chairman's Column 11.02.2022
A 0-2 home defeat last weekend for our men's first team against Cogenhoe United was hard enough to take but made even worse by the fact that it put us back in the relegation places.
Northampton O.N.Chenecks FC, our main rivals in the battle to stay up secured a valuable away win at Easington Sports FC and have leapfrogged us at the foot of the table. They are now a point ahead of us although our far inferior goal difference means finishing on the same number of points as them will almost certainly not be enough to save us.
Then on Tuesday night a 4-0 reversal at Godmanchester Rovers added to our woes and we now desperately need to start picking up a few points from somewhere if we are to have any chance of avoiding the drop.
Most worrying is our lack of goals; we have now failed to scored in any of our past four matches and we need to address this as a matter of urgency.
We are now looking at bringing in a striker but there are no guarantees and for the time being, with just 12 games left to play, we desperately need all our players to step up to the plate.
Tuesday night's match was nothing like as one-sided as the 4-0 scoreline might suggest.
We started really well and could and should have been two goals ahead in the first half. A goalbound effort that hit the post before running along the whole of the goal line somehow sums up our luck at the moment.
We conceded three second half goals as we went in search of an equaliser and the feeling in the camp is that we need that one lucky break, a deflection perhaps, a 50/50 refereeing decision to go in our favour, just one little thing that can make the difference, can help us to believe again.
But now is not the time for us to start feeling sorry for ourselves. Most importantly, we need to keep our heads up, battle on, be relentlessly positive and make our own luck. If we can do that I am convinced that we can be masters of our own destiny and we can survive.
We fight on and certainly face a stern test this weekend when our mens first team travel to second place Harborough Town tomorrow (Sat ko 3pm) before we take on Arlesey Town at the Keech Hospice Care Stadium on Tuesday night (ko 7.45pm) for a Bedfordshire Senior Cup match.
Our under 23 mens side travel to Marston Shelton Rovers on Saturday (ko 2.30pm) while our Womens Red team welcome Leigh Ramblers Ladies in the League Plate competition on Sunday (ko 2pm) and at the same time our Womens Blue side travel to face Hartham United FC Ladies.
